Alert

e.g. Google alerts - services that provide e-mail notification whenever specified search phrases appear in Blogs, News or web pages

Avatar

a graphic image, usually a photograph or a cartoon-type drawing that represents an individual on a social networking website

Blog

short for Weblog, an on-line journal or diary that allows visitors to comment and interact with the blog writer and other visitors

Board

also called a forum, discussion board, or bulletin board (bbs) - a site where a large number of users can interact in open on-line discussions by posting topics and replies - some Open Source board software includes phpBBS

Branding

the establishment of an identifiable name and graphic image for a web presence

CANSPAM

2003 legislation regarding commercial e-mail (reference:www.ftc.gov/spam ). It is very important to ensure that all emails you send as a commercial entity are in compliance with CANSPAM legislation (opt-in, opt-out, easy cancellation, physical address, etc.)

Chat

website programming that allows real-time on-line conversation (via typed comments) among a number of participants (chatrooms) - emerging technologies are allowing affordable real-time voice and video conferencing as well

Content

text, graphic, or multimedia information displayed on a website

Content Management System (CMS)

Software that enables the easy addition of content to a website without programming changes - Some examples of Open Source content management systems are Joomla!, Drupal, and phpWebsite. Most of these can run on Linux, Unix, and Windows servers. A popular CMS for Miscrosoft Windows servers is DotNetNuke. Another Windows based content management system widely used in the corporate world is Microsoft SharePoint.

Dynamic Content content that can change with each refresh of the page, or in a reaction to a user interaction with a page - most often, dynamic content either resides in a database or is gathered by a subscription reader (e.g. RSS) examples: an events calendar, blog headlines, a displayed feed from a favorite website, random quotes or expressions

Feed

A file created by blog or cms software that provides syndication capabilities for visitors who want regular updates when you change or add information to your site

Hyperlink (link)

text or a picture on a web page that links to another place on the page, another page in the website, or even a page on another website

Look and Feel

the design concept in which all pages and components of a website have the same appearance and the same basic navigation techniques

Moderate (v)

to review posts and comments for interactive sites (Blogs, forums, etc) for appropriateness of content before publishing the item to the website

Moderator

the person responsible for moderation of a site

Multimedia

Audio, video, or other non-text content

Podcast

syndication of multimedia (primarily audio) program content on a regular basis, similar to broadcast programming.

Post

v. submitting content for publication on a website, forum, or blog
n. an article or other content submitted to a website, forum, or blog

Publish / publication

the act of making content generally available on the internet through a website or a content management system

Registration

most social networking sites require visitors to register (normally minimal information like name and e-mail address) before they are allowed to post articles or comments - members-only sites require registration (often for a fee) before they can view the site's content

RSS

Really Simple Syndication - providing a "Feed" that will allow others to automatically receive new postings to your Blog or content management system.

SEO

Search Engine Optimization - the addition of keywords, descriptive phrases and other techniques to increase page ranking (position on search pages) for web pages

Highly interactive websites built around on-line communities. Blogs, and Forums are social networking tools you can add to your own website, while Facebook, MySpace, Squidoo, and Second Life are some examples of large scale social networking sites. If you want to gain maximum benefit from networking with other professionals, LinkedIn is a good place to begin.
