Playing Spider: Technologies

There is a broad array of technologies used to build the components of a web presence and that array is expanding nearly every day with new tools and technologies. More "traditional" tools are used to build websites where information is relatively static, and requires minimal updates and additions. Increasingly, there is a need for more dynamic methods of providing new and updated information and it's preferable to be able to make those changes and additions without the requirements for a technologist. There is also a rapidly increasing demand for tools which can engage the web audience and allow them to apply feedback and ask questions in real time (relatively). Not all of the technologies listed here are included in this tutorial but there is a vast amount of information available about each of them.

  • Flash™ animation imbedded in a single HTML page. This example uses a single Flash file for the entire website. As a result it takes a few seconds to load. For a complex site, there are segmentation and pre-loading techniques that can be used to minimize load time.
  • The animation was created using a programming tool called Kool Moves ( www.koolmoves.com )*
  • Time: this demonstration site required approximately 6 hours to create. Your fully functional Flash site will likely require 16 to 40 hours of time, depending on complexity and tools used.
  • * Kool Moves is a program that beginners can use for basic animations. MacroMedia Flash authoring tools have much more capability, but also require some solid programming experience and have a steep learning curve.
